Here’s a fun take on making your dorm room into home from Brentwood College School. The tone is spot on in terms walking into a blank room having to negotiate the decorating process with your roommate(s).
While the fridge was never allowed in my experiences, I second the ‘make the space comfortable’ and ‘give the room some personality’ advice of the piece. Your room needs to be comfortable; it needs to be your space (preferably disconnected from the hustle and bustle of school life); and functional.

The best piece of advice that I didn’t quote- periodically, mix it up; move the furniture around; change the layout; if a different arrangement works better, try it. Don’t let the environment get fixed or stale.
