Congratulations to The Hockaday School.
Of Lyda Hill’s (’60) $20 million gift to Hockaday, $10 million will go toward establishing Hockaday as a leader in STEM (science, technology, math, and engineering) education. The additional $10 million will go toward faculty and program support.
“Science is the solution to most of the worlds challenges, be they food shortage, energy, medicine or pollution. These matters have become my life’s interest…Hockaday is educating the most promising girls in the country – the women who will solve many of these problems. I thought it would be fun to set the bar high,” Hill told Hockaday. (THS)
Ms. Hill shocked the Hockaday community in announcing her gift, doubling the expected size of her donation from $10 to $20 million on the stage.
Hill’s announcement, captured on video (see above), is especially noteworthy for her warm appreciation and understanding for the role that the Hockaday faculty played in her growth. Less than two minutes long, I recommend it.
Hill has long history of philanthropic leadership. She is a member of The Giving Pledge the organization founded by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates which is “and effort to invite the wealthiest individuals and famileis in America to commit to giving the majority of their wealth to philanthropy.”(TGP)
