International Diversity Brings Success to Fountain Valley School Boys Hockey

Fountain Valley School Ice HockeyThe Fountain Valley School boys hockey team’s season may have ended with a tournament elimination loss to number #1 seed Regis Jesuit. But, the team’s spot in the semi-finals capped quite a turnaround from last season’s five win campaign.

Riding a team with international flavor, this year’s Danes finished the season with a 16-4-1 record. Danes coach Mike Payne explained how the players on this years team arrived at FVS.

“Because we are a college preparatory school, we look for athletes who want to embrace all aspects of school…Some find us through college prep guides. Others have found us through online services and searches.”(DP)

A Denver Post tally (Fountain Valley Ice Hockey Team, Diverse as They Come, A Sudden Power) provides a snapshot of the international reach of this season’s Danes roster:

Melting Pot
Colorado: 9
Saudi Arabia: 2
Alaska: 2
New York: 1
Oregon: 1
Czech Republic: 1
Canada: 1

Coach Payne saw the talent; encouraged them to set high goals; and the boys rose to the occasion through effort, work, and selflessness.
